Thanksgiving Plans Coming Together

Thanksgiving-%20feastIt’s hard for me to believe that we are a full week into November already.

Last night we went shopping for the final components of our Thanksgiving dinner and brought home a 24 and a half pound turkey.

We have everything we’ll need for the meal with the exception of fresh potatoes that I’ll pick up that week.

The menu is really shaping up as we close in on the holiday. We’ll be having turkey (of course), freshly made mashed potatoes, homemade gravy, candied carrots, stuffing balls, candied yams, whole kernal corn, homemade cole slaw, fresh biscuits or crescent rolls and cranberry sauce. We’ll offer sparkling apple cider to drink and for dessert, Pumpkin Roll and/or Pumpkin Cheesecake Dream Pie.

Sidney loves to help me cook, so he’s going to make the candied carrots and stuffing balls which are his recipes from his Life Skills class. Every year they prepared a Thanksgiving dinner that they served to their parents and school district staff. He’s very excited about having his own side dishes to contribute.

We’ve brought the large dining table back into the house which we’re storing in the extra bedroom. The harvest tablecloth is pressed and ready to go. My warming tray is in the house, been washed and tested to make sure it still works. (My dad gave it to us as a wedding gift.) My stemmed glasses are going to get a trip through the dishwasher to make everything sparkle.

I’ve been on the floor scrubbing around the perimeter, cleaned the oven, wiped down the walls and tile back splashes and today I’m reorganizing my cupboards to make them a little more accessible for me.

My Godson let us know that he will be coming home for Thanksgiving, a slight change in plans, but we’ll adapt. This will be our biggest dinner since being a married couple or family. We’ll have 8 around our table.

We’ve been able to do some other prep, like cleaning closets and rearranging storage. We took down the Halloween decorations, but put up our Thanksgiving decorations. Our Christmas lights are up and ready to go, as we’ll put our Christmas tree up the day after Thanksgiving. We’ve even stocked up on all our baking supplies for holiday goodies.

Things are coming together a little more each day. I’m ready to have a house full of people, great company, laughs, soothing music and terrific food.

Bring On the Holidays!!

I’m hungry thinking about it too.

When I was growing up, my mom hosted either Thanksgiving of Christmas dinner only a couple of times for her brother-in-law and our cousin. (Her sister was a vegetarian and often sat out such meals.)

My Grandmother hosted dinners after my Grandfather passed. Once I left home, all those ‘family-style’ meals and holidays came to an abrupt end. Our first Thanksgiving as husband and wife was almost a disaster, as my sister-in-law hadn’t planned for her in-laws, called and asked us if she could have our turkey, seeing as how it was just going to be my husband and I…. This year is so special because we get to have Bud’s mother and Uncle as well as his Aunt and with my best friend of 32 years and her son – our Godson- along for the ‘ride’ it’s going to be great!

I got the 24.5 lb turkey for .49 cents a pound… our grocery store has a ‘points’ program at this time of year, so I was able to stock up and get all my baking and dinner ingredients and still saved $119 off my grocery order! Woo Hooo!!!

I’m very thankful for family and friends. We are blessed! oxoxox

You’ll have to clean it all again before christmas right? You’ve made my mouth water just thinking about it Robin. Have fun.

Yep, will likely clean it all again, though my plan is that once it’s all done, I’m just going to ‘maintain’ it. We put up our Christmas tree on Friday after Thanksgiving, so we move furniture and deep clean the living room before decorating. I’m pretty ‘anal’ about keeping things clean and organized. I plan on having fun, enjoying a great meal and making memories.

      Love & Hugs oxox
